Sonny Sinclair has enjoyed a career that many other musicians could only dream of: recording multiple albums, releasing an array of singles and playing countless live shows to audiences across Canada, the United States and Europe, all the while maintaining a strong personal life with many lifelong friendships, living in his beloved community of Brantford, and having a fruitful marriage.
Sinclair, however, who grew up into a family that loved music, would catch the musical bug himself.
“I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Brantford….and my folks were musical. My dad played banjo, and my mother played piano. She played classical music…and could play by ear…she was pretty accomplished. I had another sister who played piano too, and another sister who sang. I had a cousin about 20 years older than me who built houses by day, was a milkman, and played music on the weekends in Halton County. He’d come to the house two or three times a year and always bring his guitar. This was about the time I picked up a guitar at about age 11. My fingers were tiny, the strings were hard, and the action on the guitar was terrible. He helped me reorganize that and talked my folks into buying me a nice used Harmony guitar. Every time he came, he showed me a new guitar chord or where to put my fingers. So, we were a very musical family….and that’s a cool environment to grow up in.”
